Action on Addiction

There is currently demand for capable practitioners who can help people with problems relating to addiction.  Addictions counselling involves many different therapeutic approaches that can support them.

The foundation degree in Addictions Counselling is delivered by Action on Addiction. This is a University of Bath franchised course taught at the Centre for Addiction Treatment Studies (CATS) in Warminster.  Students who successfully complete the two-year foundation degree may be able to progress on to a third-year top-up course and earn a Bachelor of Science qualification.

CATS also offers short vocational training for counsellors, substance misuse workers and other professionals seeking to develop their skills and knowledge in this field.

Everyone knows someone who is affected by addiction, and the CATS experience is one of life-changing education.  It has a transformative effect on all our students and they, in turn, make a seismic difference to the lives of others affected by addiction.

Many people who have focused on other areas of their life may feel a degree is out of their reach.  However, at CATS we make this a reality for people from all walks of life.  Our tutors, who are experts in their field, provide extra support for mature students who don’t feel confident about returning to study.  In addition, there is no need to relocate for a university education – we find students a work-based placement near their home, and each unit is taught in three, four and five day blocks (B&B accommodation is available at the Centre).  CATS students also have access to the library, and the sports and recreation facilities, at the University of Bath Campus (less than half an hour’s drive away from Warminster).

Students benefit from teaching by academic staff and practitioners who are experts in their field.  Whether a college leaver looking to make the transition into higher education, or a qualified professional seeking a career change, CATS offers individuals the professional education and training they need to develop their career.

‘I cannot express how much I’ve gained from the degree, and can only thank the tutors and the staff at the Centre for Addiction Treatment Studies for helping me begin my career.’

Action on Addiction is a national charity, which provides treatment and help for those affected by addiction.  The charity offers residential and community-based addiction treatment to individuals and families.

Clouds House, our residential rehab in Wiltshire, has been providing evidence-based treatment since 1983.

The work of Action on Addiction is wide-ranging and far-reaching. For every person the charity helps to move their lives on in recovery, another five people benefit indirectly. This includes children growing up with an addicted parent, loved ones whose relationships are marred by the effects of addiction, as well as friends, colleagues and/or neighbours.
