Devizes Town Guide

Known to be a tiny settlement around the late 11th century, Devizes was nothing more than a cluster of cottages huddled around the mighty Norman fortress of Devizes Castle wherein the workers, farmers, crafts men who fed the armies of the castle as well as taking care of their everyday needs such as pots, woven cloth, meat, washing clothes and  baking bread etc.
In 1141 they were granted  charter allowing them to ply their wares outside the castle walls by way of a weekly market, a market that exists today even though the castle is long gone.
Today Devizes is a busy thriving town with many varied and interesting shops to explore.
