Wessex Concert Orchestra Presents ‘Myths and Legends’
After its successful Summer Concert Wessex Concert Orchestra makes a welcome return to the Corn Exchange, Devizes on Saturday 9th December at 7.30pm with
a winter concert ‘Myths and Legends’
Loreley overture – Bruch King Arthur Suite – Elgar
Pictures at an Exhibition – Mussorsky arr. Ravel;
Soprano Arias – soloist Stephanie Harrison
(to include Humperdink’s Evening Prayer from Hansel and Gretel and When I am laid from Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas)
Come and hear the mysteries from German and Danish mythology of the striking Lorelei as depicted by Bruch, the evil Elf King according to Schubert, along with the soothing Evening Prayer from Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel. The first half will be rounded off by Elgar’s rousing King Arthur Suite depicting the Celtic legend’s rise and fall. In the second half, the contrasting stories painted by Viktor Hartmann, portrayed in music by Mussorgksy in ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ (orchestrated by Ravel) will be told.
Conductor Tim Harrison says “There are a great range of different musical styles to hear showcasing different characters from mythology, from fiery German, English and Russian music. We are also joined by soprano Stephanie Harrison for a selection of arias. It’s a complete myth that it’s easier for conductors to follow a soloist they know well…especially when it’s your wife! I’m excited to be working with Steph, but a bit anxious of the chores I might be set at home if I make any mistakes! We hope you can join us”
