Woodturning Club
The Kennet & Avon Woodturning Club continues to grow from strength to strength with both seasoned turners and those that have taken up the hobby of turning more recently. Many members travel to Trowbridge from all over West Wiltshire and North and East Somerset to participate and share their passion of wood turning.
The club organises many professional wood turning demonstrations throughout the year and on the 12 March the club was pleased to welcome Dave Appleby a professional turner from Somerset who demonstrated the turning of an Ash bowl with pewter embellishment. Dave first began turning as a teenager in his father’s shed using an adapted drill, today he is widely known for using recycled and sustainable wood that he obtains from farms, gardens and log piles. He gains his inspiration from the natural organic form and beauty of the wood and the suggested initial shape of the piece will often influence the purpose of the finished piece.
The club lathes are regularly used by the members and the more experienced turners are always on hand to assist and advise those that may have more recently started turning and are looking to improve their techniques.
New club members that wish to take up turning as well as those experienced turners who enjoy sharing their experiences, ideas and skills developed over the years are always welcome to what is a friendly and helpful atmosphere. There are no age or gender barriers, our current membership ranges in age from teenagers to those that are long retired.
The club meets at St John Church Hall, Upper Studley, Trowbridge on the second Thursday of each month starting at 7:15pm. Please contact Phil on 07548803731 or John on 01225 752373 if you should have any questions.
